A focus on financial wellbeing

Travelodge recognised the need to enhance its colleagues' financial resilience. While the company was already focusing on providing stable contracts (avoiding zero-hour contracts) and offering career progression through its Aspire development programme, it required an innovative tool to support employees who needed access to their wages between paydays, helping them avoid reliance on high-cost credit options.

This led Travelodge to introduce Stream as a key part of its comprehensive 'Better Me' wellbeing strategy, which addresses emotional, physical, work, and financial wellbeing.

Empowerment and control

The introduction of Stream has had a significant, positive impact on colleague sentiment and financial habits:

  • Colleague happiness: 91% of Travelodge employees expressed happiness with the introduction of Stream, with 74% reporting being 'very happy.'
  • Increased focus: 29% of colleagues reported being able to focus more on doing a good job.
  • Budgeting and awareness: 34% noted they are more aware of how much they are spending, aiding better financial planning.
  • Retention and support: 27% said they felt better supported and/or were more likely to work for Travelodge for longer.

While still early in the journey, Travelodge has observed encouraging trends that support positive business outcomes:

  • Improved payroll accuracy: Track allows colleagues to check their submitted hours which has led to greater accuracy in payroll and fewer queries for the management team.
  • Drop in turnover: Travelodge has seen a lower drop in turnover in 2025 compared to 2024.

The platform's additional features, such as Workplace Savings and access to financial coaching are also key components. The save function is actively promoted to encourage financial resilience.

  • Since launch, £1.1 million has been deposited into savings, indicating habitual, proactive saving.

Advice for other businesses

Travelodge's Katharine Gourley - Director of People Operations, shares advice for companies considering Stream and other financial wellbeing benefits, emphasising that the benefit is about much more than just drawing down on wages early:

"Understand your demographic and what parts of this will be most useful to your colleagues—we’ve focussed on promoting the save function to our salaried colleagues for example... It’s easy to assume that’s all people will use it for but we’re finding really heavy usage of the other features."
